Jonah Reyes styles shelves for interiors shoots — the ones that look effortless and take an hour. At home he gives himself ten minutes, once a week.
Minute one: clear everything
"Empty the whole shelf. Not tidy it — empty it. You can't see what a shelf wants while it's wearing everything it owns."
Minutes two to five: pick three
One tall (a vase), one stacked (two books, spines out or covers out — commit), one low (a bowl, a small clock). Arrange them so the tops make a loose triangle. "The triangle is the whole job. Your eye wants a path, not a lineup."
Minutes six to eight: one shine
Two matte pieces, one that catches light — brass, glaze, glass. "One reflective object reads curated. Three read like a gift shop."
The last two minutes: walk away
"Leave the empty stretch alone. The gap is the frame. If you fill it, you've un-styled the shelf." Then he photographs it on his phone — "if it looks good at thumbnail size, it's done."
Begin with one piece worth building around from the accents row.
